What To Do When Someone Dies in Perth
Losing someone close to you can feel overwhelming, and it’s often difficult to know what to do next.
At Remembrance Ladies, we provide gentle, compassionate support to help guide you through the first steps with care, understanding and reassurance.
Take a Moment
Before anything else, it’s important to pause and give yourself time.
There is no need to rush. This is an emotional time, and it’s okay to take a moment to gather your thoughts and be with your loved ones.
Step 1: Contact a Doctor
A doctor must confirm that death has occurred.
- If your loved one has passed away at home, contact their usual doctor
- If they have passed away in a hospital or care facility, this is usually arranged for you
The doctor will issue a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death, which is required before funeral arrangements can proceed.
Step 2: Speak with a Funeral Director
Once the passing has been confirmed, you can contact a funeral director.
At Remembrance Ladies, our female funeral directors — led by Susie Lombardi — provide calm, supportive guidance during this step.
We can assist with:
- Bringing your loved one into our care
- Explaining what happens next
- Gently guiding you through the process
We are available 24 hours a day to support you when you are ready.
Step 3: Let Family and Close Friends Know
You may wish to begin informing family members and close friends.
This can be an emotional step, and you may choose to ask someone you trust to help you communicate this news.
Step 4: Begin Funeral Arrangements
When you feel ready, we will gently guide you through the funeral planning process.
This may include:
- Choosing between burial or cremation
- Deciding on the type of service
- Discussing location and personal touches
We take the time to explain everything clearly and support you at your own pace.
Step 5: Allow Yourself Time
There is no “right way” to navigate this time.
Our role is to support you with compassion and understanding, allowing you to:
- Take things step by step
- Make decisions when you feel ready
- Focus on remembering your loved one
A Gentle, Supportive Approach
At Remembrance Ladies, we understand that many families feel more comfortable working with a female funeral director during such a difficult time.
Our approach focuses on:
- Compassionate and understanding communication
- A calm and supportive environment
- Guidance without pressure
- Respect for your emotional needs
