First Christmas Without a Loved One

Christmas is known for happiness, rest and quality time spent with family. However, if you have lost a loved one this year, Christmas may be shrouded by sadness and memories of happier times.

With Christmas just around the corner, here are some ways to help you get through the festive season without your loved one.

Accepting the sadness

If you have lost a loved one this year, this first Christmas will be one of sadness and grief. As difficult as these emotions are, it is essential for your wellbeing to take time to mourn your loss. The temptation to remain isolated maybe strong, however it is beneficial to surround yourself with others during these times. You can still turn down invitations or shorten evenings if you feel the need to do so.

Establishing new family traditions

To avoid dwelling on the pain, it’s a good idea to establish new family traditions, such as, by changing the place that the Christmas dinner is usually held. By adding that little bit of change you will be able to build new memories with your family that will become more enjoyable each year.

Remembering happy moments

Honour your loved one by remembering happy times spent with them. Get the old photo albums out or share anecdotes from your loved one’s. Lighting a candle to remember them or playing their favourite music is also a good way to keep their memory alive.
